I had the privilege of visiting the Audubon Zoo with my good friend R! What a great zoo in the middle of the park! So pretty!

I remember seeing my first albino alligator there. Love it!
ReplyDeleteOh, but they're not albinos...albinos don't have any melanin. Them gators are leucistic...they're missing all pigmentation, not just melanin. Since albino eyes have no melanin, the blood vessels show through giving them red eyes. Leucistic critters have normal colored eyes...blue in the case of them gators. White lions are leucistic, too...sometimes their eyes *and* paw pads are said to be blue/grey in color. AWESOME!
